Page Rims, Hubs, Spokes
Hubs Hubs determine the width of the wheel, although you can add spacers. Modern road bikes are 100mm in the front, and 130mm in the rear. Mountain bikes are 135mm in the rear, or 142mm "boost". Match the number of holes to the count on the rims. Disc brakes are center lock or 6 bolt. Adapters are available. Track, freewheel, freehub (vintage). Rims Rims determine the size of the wheel, and which tires you can use. Choose between strength, aerodynamics, weight, price. Aluminum is very common, steel is outdated - heavy and limited braking, especially when wet. Carbon is expensive, although imports are getting very cheap. Check if the rim is designed for rim braking before use. Spokes Steel, aluminum, titanium. Straight pull, J-bend. Round, oval, aero. Use a wheel building app to calculate your spoke lengths.

Pros Cons
  • Simpler system, fewer parts, straightforward shifting.
    • Can be cheaper to build with old/used parts.
  • Narrow wide chainring locks in the chain to prevent drops.
  • Larger gaps between gears, fewer cadence options.
    • This is less of an issue as you increase gears in the cassette.
  • Wide chain angle is noisy and less efficient.
  • Backpedaling can drop the chain to smaller gears.
  • MTB cassettes are heavy, especially cheaper ones.
1x drivetrains don't need a left shifter or extra chainrings. They have some pros and cons to consider before switching.     1x12 Shimano doesn't have a 12 speed road group, and GRX is a 10 or 11 speed system. However, Deore, SLX, XT, and XTR are 12 speed mtb systems available today. Shimano uses a new Micro Spline hub that allows a 10t smallest cog. This lets you run a smaller chainring in front for a more narrow chainline. SunRace has a 12 speed cassette that fits on older freehubs. I'm currently using this one but be warned, it's 648g which is heavier than the Shimano options. An XTR 12 speed is 367g, but you will pay for that difference.

Older 10 speed style road bikes are 100mm in the front and 130mm in the rear. 90s style mountain bikes are 100mm in the front and 135mm in the rear. Now there is Boost and Boost+ standards, and quick release skewers and through axles. You can convert a through axle wheel to use quick release skewers, but not the other way around. Over Lock-nut Diameter (OLD) is the distance between the outside of the lock-nuts on a hub. This matches the width on the frame's fork and rear dropouts.
