Part | Ron Stout 1974 frameset | Frameset | |
Bike | Ron Stout Fixie I bought this frame on ebay, but was able to pick it up locally for a total of around $125. It's made by Ron Stout, a custom frame builder in Salt Lake CIty. The ad said it was made in the 70's, but I read that he was active in the 80s and 90s. Anyway, this is a superlight columbus frame. It's on the small side which fits me great. It came with a matching bike pump, and I think the paint job and logo are pretty sweet. |

Bike | Klein Performance Dura Ace This is a fun bike, very responsive.Downtube shifters are very clicky on the aluminum frame, and the wheel hubs are loud too.Should I keep building up a triple or switch to 7700?The brake levers are not comfortable in this position, need to adjust the handlebars. |

Article | Fixies What is a fixie? A fixie, or fixed wheel bike, has a single cog fixed to the wheel, so it will spin forward or backwards with the cranks, but can't spin freely. You can put back pressure on the pedals to slow down, or lock your legs to skid to a stop. Riding a fixie can feel more connected with the bike, since you're always in motion with it. You will find yourself speeding up your approach to hills and generally riding more efficiently. Fixed gear hubs A modern bike wheel has a freehub, where the cassette attaches. It has a ratchet system that allows it to freely spin backwards, but locks to rotate the wheel when spun forward. A fixed gear hub has threads for a single cog, and reverse threads for a lock ring. This is so that when you backpedal, the force will tighten the lockring instead of loosening the cog. Look for track hubs, which have the right threads for a cog and lock ring. Flip flop hubs Some wheels have a fixed gear on one side and a freewheel on the other to let you flip the wheel around and switch between the two. Fixed gear frames You can go with a track specific frame that has horizontal dropouts. You can also use a vintage frame that has diagnal dropouts. If you really want to use a normal frame with vertical dropouts, you can find special hubs that can adjust forward and back in place. |

Article | Wheels And Hubs Wheels can make a big difference on a bike. Lightweight wheels are better for climbing and deep rims are better for aero.Wheels are composed of a rim, hub, spokes, nipples, rim tape, and a valve stem for tubeless tires.Rims are made in aluminum or carbon fiber. They define the wheel size, rim width, spoke count, and tubless tire compatibility. Standard aluminum rims can use rim brakes, but lightweight aluminum or carbon rims may be disc only due to thinner walls. Eyelets (metal grommets the spokes go in) on nicer rims protect them from tool marks when truing the wheel. Spokes are commonly double butted, which means they have a thinner diameter in the middle than in the threads and shoulder. Low end wheels have heaver non butted spokes, and lightweight wheels can have triple or aero/bladed spokes. Cutting edge wheels have carbon fiber or polymer spokes.Hubs determine the over locknut diameter (OLD), the width of the hub including lock nuts and spacers that will fit within a frame's rear dropouts. Road bikes are typically 130mm, old mountain bikes are 135mm. Thru axels for road are 142mm, and 148mm boost for mountain bikes. Some hubs have adapters that can convert between quick release and thru axel.Bike wheel sizesTypeWheel sizeRim sizeRoad29"/700C622mmGravel27.5"/650B584mmMTB26"559mm |

Article | Choosing bike wheels SizeWhile size wheel do you need for your bike? Some frames are designed to handle a range of tire and rim sizes, while aero race bikes have little room for variances.Do you want to run narrow road tires, or larger, like 32c or even bigger for gravel our touring? Pick a rim that is wide enough to safely accommodate these options. Most road bikes are on 700c rims (a 28" tire), but some go for 650c (27.5") for smaller riders, or bigger tires. Most road caliper brakes are designed for a 700c rim. Touring or gravel bikes with 650c tires could have a cantilever brake with longer reach adjustment to allow swapping between 700c and 650c tires. Disc brakes eliminates the brake reach issue, since different size wheels will still have the brake rotor in the same place.Mountain bikes are often 26", and this size can also be used on touring/gravel bikes. However, they can also come in 27.5" and 29".The hubs also need to fit the frame. Measure the distance between dropouts to find the "over lock nut dimension" (O.L.D.), which is total length of the hub including lock nuts.PriceYou can find a used pair on craigslist under a few hundred that will get you rolling. Don't buy if it's bent or damaged. You can find some nice new rims around 5-600. You can find better rims under 1000. Carbon race rims can go from 1000 - 3000+.Pick your price before you shop so you don't get sucked into paying for something you don't need.MaterialNew rims come in aluminum and carbon. Aluminum works fine, but carbon can be lighter and stiffer although much more expensive.
